Forward Deployed Data Scientist
About Us
We’re building a platform that powers the biggest AI groups in the world — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google — with human feedback data for evaluating and training their models. Surge was founded by former ML engineers focused on providing the highest quality data in the industry. Instead of outsourcing to call centers overseas, we’ve built an elite workforce based in the US, custom annotation tools, and sophisticated quality control systems. Our product has been a “game-changer” for ML teams, and we’ve run a profitable business from day one without raising venture funding.
The Role
As a Forward Deployed Data Scientist, you’ll partner directly with leading AI labs to shape how their models are trained, evaluated, and improved. You’ll embed with research teams to understand their performance bottlenecks, design targeted data collection strategies, and analyze experimental results to drive model progress.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives on impact and iteration — someone who loves digging into ambiguous problems, rapidly prototyping data workflows, and turning messy real-world feedback into actionable insight. Your work will live at the heart of frontier AI development, influencing how the most advanced models learn and align with human values.
What We’re Looking for
Passion for Data Analysis - Analyzing data and iterating on collection methods to improve model performance
Interest in AI Research - Applied machine learning and desire to advance leading models
Love of Collaboration - Excitement to work closely with AI researchers to push models forward
Examples of Work You Might Do
Designing data collection workflows optimized for particular model needs
Implementing quality controls to reduce biases and ensure model safety
Running experiments to make leading models more insightful, compelling, safe, and human aligned.
How to Apply
To apply, please email careers@surgehq.ai with your background and interest in collaborating with Surge. Please include the name of the role you’re applying for in the subject line or email body. We welcome personal projects and writings!
