Our efforts contribute to OpenAI's overarching goal of developing AI that benefits humanity.

About the Role

OpenAI is seeking a highly experienced Child Safety Manager to lead our rapidly expanding child safety investigations team. This pivotal role involves guiding the team through significant growth, diversifying its focus, and standardizing its functions to address a wide range of child safety issues beyond just sexual content.

The ideal candidate will have at least ten years working on child safety and 5+ years growing and leading teams of 5 or more people in the tech industry investigating child safety abuse. They will also have a track record of building relationships with senior internal stakeholders and the broader AI, trust, and safety communities.

This role reports to our Investigations Team Manager and is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage the expansion and investigation of high-priority abuse leads discovered off-platform. Collaborate with the Collections team for a comprehensive response to emerging threats.

  • Oversee automated monitoring of internal classifier performance, develop key metric reports, and present findings to cross-functional and leadership teams.

  • Enhance processes and tools to meet regulatory and legal commitments for protecting minors.

  • Lead long-term investigations into new abuse areas, providing actionable insights to inform policy and enforcement strategies.

  • Establish efficient escalation protocols, prioritize critical issues, and delegate tasks to ensure swift resolution without compromising strategic projects.

  • Collaborate with technical teams to integrate innovative technologies and streamline processes, amplifying the investigative efforts to support stakeholders.

  • Represent the team’s findings to external audiences in industry, government, and academia, enhancing OpenAI's reputation as a leader in child safety.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Strong technical competence in related areas (e.g. security engineering, data science).

  • Experience with generative AI abuse and applying LLMs to investigatory workflows.
