About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the Role

Anthropic’s Research team is looking for a Data Operations Lead to help us level up our human feedback work and accelerate our ability to develop models. This person will be the ‘first port of call’ for all operational aspects of human feedback data management, including scoping, coordinating, procuring and managing projects and deliverables, ensuring that human data collection operations are running smoothly and that the data collected has high utility, quality, diversity, and volume. They will build and maintain strong relationships with our HF resources and optimize how we do this work on an ongoing basis. It will be important for this person to understand the IC work required for this role so that they can hire for and coach the right skillset on their team.

Note: We are looking for candidates who can start within 3 months.

We have a strong preference to candidates that can come to the SF HQ. We will consider all candidates who can meet the organization's hybrid policy, provided you have significant (60%+) overlap with Pacific Time.

  • Scope, coordinate, and procure data collection and labeling projects and identify and capitalize on opportunities to make them more efficient.
  • Monitor ongoing projects to make sure that resources are directed appropriately, adjusting scope and instructions with new information.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with external vendors and contractors, ensuring that our work together is high-value and low-friction.
  • Doing IC work like writing labeling instructions, reviewing data, and making sure we have the right mix of quality, diversity, and volume of data, as well as figuring out how to improve the tooling or instructions to make things more efficient.
  • Report out on projects, including dashboards and data analysis.
  • Partner with Engineering to maintain and improve our feedback interface.
  • Build and manage an in-house team of data labelers to support this process.

You may be a good fit if you

  • Are extremely detail-oriented and enjoy poring over information and data line-by-line.
  • Have exceptional project and relationship management skills, with both internal and external parties.
  • Have a strong understanding of how LLMs work and of prompt engineering.
  • Have experience with data collection, labeling, and analysis.
  • Have experience using tools like SQL, Python, Tableau, etc.

Strong candidates may also have experience with

  • Have experience with human data collection and labeling specific to large language models.
  • Have managed a team of external contractors and/or vendors before.
  • Have conceived of and launched new technical programs.
  • Have worked with researchers and engineers.

The expected salary range for this position is:

Annual Salary:
$230,000$405,000 USD

Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

US visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate; operations roles are especially difficult to support. But if we make you an offer, we will make every effort to get you into the United States, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

Compensation and Benefits*

Anthropic’s compensation package consists of three elements: salary, equity, and benefits. We are committed to pay fairness and aim for these three elements collectively to be highly competitive with market rates.

  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance for you and all your dependents.
  • 401(k) plan with 4% matching.

Employees based outside of the UK or US will receive a different benefits package. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors, including where you place on our internal performance ladders, which is based on factors including past work experience, relevant education, and performance on our interviews or in a work trial.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Come work with us!

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
